Statement on Supreme Court’s Ruling of Roe and Casey in the Dobbs case

Legal Aid of Marin Supports Reproductive Freedom and Opposes the Overturning of Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey

Legal Aid of Marin’s mission is to create “an equitable Marin by empowering the community through legal representation, advocacy, and education.” We envision “an inclusive Marin with equal justice and opportunity for all.” The United States Supreme Court’s overruling of Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey presents us with an opportunity to reflect on and reaffirm our commitment to increasing access to justice and demanding equality for Marin community members experiencing poverty and individuals who are currently or have historically been marginalized.   The Court’s decision to overrule almost 50 years of reaffirmed precedent guaranteeing all people the Constitutional right to receive abortion care is antithetical to our organizational mission, vision, and values. Each day, Legal Aid of Marin works to enforce the rights of our clients, and we dedicate our resources to expanding access to those rights, by advocating for renter protections, recovering workers’ stolen wages, addressing the criminalization of poverty, securing pro bono representation, or collaborating with partner organizations to increase community access to services and resources. We envision a society that promotes equality for all, and the Court’s reversal of Constitutional reproductive freedom does the opposite by depriving people of their right to privacy and autonomy to make critical health care decisions. We are mindful that this decision will disproportionately impact BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) communities, and remain steadfastly committed to prioritizing racial equity in our work.   Legal Aid of Marin stands in solidarity with everyone impacted by this decision, both in Marin County and across the United States, and we will continue our work toward a Marin that is inclusive, equitable, and just through legal representation, advocacy, and education. We honor organizations and coalitions whose expertise will lead the charge in demanding reproductive freedom for all.
